Money in politics creates Goliaths - we need you to fill our sling!

Do you remember the story of David and Goliath? You know the one - David has a sling and has to fight a giant in the other army.

Sometimes, I envy David’s odds.

In Ohio politics, money builds giants. Our Statehouse has seen two Speakers ousted from the position amidst FBI investigations into their relationships with money, corporations, and lobbyists.

Most recently, Larry Householder has been indicted over $60 million worth of ‘dark money’ that he controlled to leverage and build power for himself. The money came from Company A (assumed to be First Energy) to pass a bailout for First Energy’s nuclear power production.

HEROES ACT INTRODUCED

The U.S. House of Representatives introduced the HEROES Act on Tuesday May 12th.

In Ohio, we have already seen $775 million worth of state budget cuts to education, healthcare, and other community services. These will only increase without federal relief. We need to build an economy that works for all and legislation that invests in communities and people first will be the foundation of a post-covid-19 economic recovery.

TAKE ACTION NOW

This legislation will do the following*: (This is from a very preliminary reading of the legislation and analysis. We will update this page as we read further.)

  • Invest an additional $14 billion for SNAP, WIC, and child nutrition programs during the pandemic and economic recovery period.

  • An additional $170 million for food banks and farmers

  • More than $120 billion in rental assistance to prevent massive evictions this summer and next fall.

  • Increase in Medicaid funding by the federal government to reduce the costs to the states and communities.

  • $25 million to support seasonal farmworkers and migrant laborers.

  • $500 billion for state and $375 billion for local community budget stabilization.

And much more…

Federal CARES ACT

Federal CARES ACT

The federal Coronavirus, Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act passed Congress last week. This legislation is only the beginning of the federal response we will need for to recover from this virus. Like any disaster, we can invest now and down the road to be more resilient in the future.

One woman named Ruth, who comes to Our Daily Bread on a regular basis, was concerned. She often buys groceries with a SNAP card for her neighbor, who is disabled. Her neighbor is white, and Ruth is African-American. She was concerned that the cashier at Kroger or Aldi would be suspicious if she presented a card with a picture of a white lady on it; suspecting her of some sort of deception!
